Can I switch off extended attributes warning error when backup to network?
I need to schedule a daily backup of my documents to a company
network share.
All works fine, but every day I need to confirm that some files
(Microsoft User Data/Entourage Script Menu Items/...) have had an
extended attributes problem.
I don't want to see alway this error, i want to see only REAL
problem, if it's.
Can you help me?
Many thanks.
Max

Hi Max:
I'd like to take a look at the errors. CCC already suppresses errors that aren't important or indicative of a problem. If you're seeing errors, that probably means there is a real issue with the backup. Can you submit your logs to me for review? The easiest way to do this is from within CCC:
Thanks,
Mike

On attachment my last log.
I don't care a backup that will restore the machine completely, I just want to save my user's folder data so I think that the errors identified are minor. Am I wrong?
Please do not publish the information in the log, if it is not really necessary.
Thanks.
Max

Hi Max:
Extended attributes are often "disposable" data, but if the extended attribute happens to be a resource fork, there's a good chance that it has important data.
I didn't get your log, can you try attaching that again? I made this discussion private, so now only you and I can see anything posted here.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Max:
Those are resource forks that are getting lost, so in general, I deem them as being important enough to complain about, and there's no way to suppress the messages short of solving the problem that leads to them.
I've seen this pattern of errors before -- the remote filesystem is complaining when CCC tries to write extended attributes larger than 4KB. 4KB is the typical limit for most filesystems, though there is generally an exception for resource forks, because there is no limit for resource forks on HFS+. That doesn't mean every filesystem allows it, though, sometimes they just outright refuse to write them. I have even seen some filesystems that refuse to write Apple-specific extended attributes altogether (e.g. any attribute preceded with "com.apple").
There's also a chance that there is a bit of filesystem corruption on the destination that is leading to these errors, so the first thing I would suggest would be to delete those files from the destination volume, then try the backup task again. If the errors recur, I would conclude that the remote filesystem simply isn't going to support large extended attributes, resource forks, etc. If those four items are the only items affected, you could exclude them from the backup task, delete them (e.g. if you don't need them), or you could back up to a different destination (e.g. to a disk image on the network share).
Mike
