Not sure how to proceed

I had a 2010 iMac 27 running Snow Leopard. I had backed it up to an external HD using CCC. The computer had problems that 4 trips to the Apple Store tech center did not fix, and they recently replaced it with a new iMac27, now running Lion. It won't recognize the previous HD backup drive, and when I go to manually back up I get several warnings that I don't understand. SO...do I need to wipe the HD and start over (I had migrated the data from the Time Machine backup drive to my new iMac), or upgrade to the newest version, or just follow the warnings (am not clear about what the warnings want me to do)? Help! I need to make sure I have this backup if I decide to upgrade to Mtn Lion...and will there be more CCC problems if I do that?

    Hi DS:

I don't know what the warnings are, but I'll take a stab at it. You shouldn't need to erase the destination volume unless you suspect that it has filesystem problems. That's generally not the case, and the following procedure will get your backup updated pretty quickly:

    1. Launch CCC
    2. Choose your new iMac's startup disk as the source volume
    3. Choose your backup volume as the Destination
    4. Choose "Temporarily archive modified and deleted items" from the presets menu
    5. If a yellow caution triangle appears next to the "Customize these settings" button, click it, and let me know what the warnings are. Either way, go ahead and proceed to the next step.
    6. Click the Clone button

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the clear instructions.

Did steps 1-4. Yellow triangle appeared and the warning is: "The destination volume does not have a Recovery HD partition. Some OS features may be restricted while booted from the destination."

The dialogue box goes on to suggest: CCC can create and clone the Recovery HD partition for you. Open the Disk Center and click "Recovery HD" tab to perform this task.

Would you recommend I follow this suggestion or do something else? Thanks again!

Yes, go ahead and proceed to the Disk Center, click on your destination volume, click on the Recovery HD tab, then click the button to create the Recovery HD volume. When you go back to the cloning task, the warning should be gone.
