I want to reformat my hard drive on my macbook pro 15". I would like to create a cloned copy of my hard drive on an external hard drive and then restore that clone back to my macbook pro hard drive. I'm confused as to the options on CCC. As the source I chose the macbook pro hard drive and as the destination I chose a new disk image, but I found no way to save that to the external hard drive. any advice?

    Hi Vanendo,

What you want to do is quite simple, as you don't have data on the external drive that you are trying to preserve, correct? Here is what I recommend:

    1. Plug your external hard drive into your computer.
    2. Launch CCC and select your internal hard drive as the source and the external hard drive as the target. (In your case, you should not be using disk images. If you do not see your external drive as an option in the target menu, let me know and we can troubleshoot that.)
    3. Click Clone and let CCC complete the clone.
    4. This step depends upon your exact drive and computer combination. Try restarting your computer while holding down the option key. If you see your external drive listed, select that as your boot drive. (If not, let me know your drive and computer and we can figure out alternatives.)
    5. Boot your computer and repeat steps 2 & 3, but instead select the external drive as the source and the internal hard drive as the target.
    6. Reboot holding down the option key and select your internal hard drive to boot from.

Please let me know if you have any questions,
    Sarah

Sarah, thanks for the help. I selected my int hd as the source and the ext hd as the target. Once that is complete I plan to reformat my int hd and then clone my int hd from the ext .dmg image on my ext hd. To do that I plan to drag the .dmg image from the ext hd and open it on the int hd. Is that the right procedure?

CCC finished the clone but the ext hd does not show a disk image. This is what the folder looks like:

    Hi Raymond:

You cloned directly to the destination volume, not to a disk image. Back tracking just a bit:

As the source I chose the macbook pro hard drive and as the destination I chose a new disk image, but I found no way to save that to the external hard drive.

After choosing "New disk image" from CCC's Destination menu, you're presented with a standard "Save dialog" asking you where to save the disk image. The default presentation of the Save Dialog is woefully inadequate, so I'm not surprised that you had trouble finding your external volume. You need to click on the button circled in red in this screenshot to reveal the Finder sidebar:

Once you can see the sidebar, you should be able to find your external hard drive.

Anyway, that's not relevant for getting your data restored. You should have a bootable backup at this point, and that's a really good thing to have. Check out this section of CCC's documentation for step-by-step instructions for restoring the data from that volume:

Restoring an entire volume (including system files)

The only thing I might add to those instructions would be a suggestion to exclude any folders from the restore task that were already on your destination volume. "Backups" for example, may not have come from your original source, you may not want to restore that back to your internal hard drive.

Let me know if you get stuck or have additional questions.

    Mike
