Just purchased the terrific CCC app but also want the added security
of TM. I presume I need to turn off TM to run CCC or will TM not run until CCC is
finished doing its thing and then just pick up where it left off? Thanks in advance.

CCC and TM can run at the same time without conflict. Time Machine will, however, consume all of the space that you give it. If you're using the same backup volume for both solutions, your CCC backups would eventually run out of space. When people want to back up using both CCC and Time Machine, I usually recommend that you give Time Machine a dedicated volume. This can be a completely separate, physical disk, or just a partition on your backup drive. This video demonstrates how you can non-destructively add a partition to your current backup disk:

A quick How-To video that shows you how to add a partition to your backup volume
