Odd "Invalid argument (22)" errors

To whom it may concern,

I'm getting odd Invalid argument (22) all over the place. It seem to be related to this past issue (http://help.bombich.com/discussions/questions/460-no-go-with-ccc), but I'm not totally sure.

Here's the lowdown:

  • 17 inch MacBook Pro
  • Recently formatted and re-installed OS/Apps
  • I have a "clone" FireWire 400 backup drive that worked fine before, on a nightly basis
  • after re-installation, formatted "clone" backup drive
  • started getting errors. Here's a sample.

"rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Stickies.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/System Preferences.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/TextEdit.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/TextWrangler.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/The Unarchiver.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Things.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Time Machine.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Tower.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Transmission.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Trillian.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Utilities\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/VLC.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/Versions.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/VirtualHostX.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/YouSendIt.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/coconutBattery.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***", "rsync: recv_generator: mkdir \"/Volumes/clone/Applications/iCal.app\" failed: Invalid argument (22)", "*** Skipping any contents from this failed directory ***",

Not exactly sure what changed, but I just can't seem to backup to this drive anymore, but disk utility doesn't indicate any errors on the drive. I should point out that this external drive is a WD, daisy chained to three other FW drives that are nearly identical.

Sincerely,
Rene

    Hi Rene:

Thanks for attaching the full log, the previous failed backup task tells the story better and in fewer words:

    01/31 10:22:42 rsync: write failed on "/Volumes/clone/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS5/Adobe Illustrator.app/Contents/Frameworks/AdobePSL.framework/Versions/A/AdobePSL": Invalid argument (51)
01/31 10:22:42 rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at /Volumes/Home/Users/bombich/Development/Bombich_Software/rsync/rsync-3.0.6/io.c(600) [sender=3.0.6] (51)

Usually the "Invalid argument" errors indicate minor filesystem damage, but when we see thousands of them, it is more likely that there is a hardware problem at play. The "write failed" error is a definitive sign that the hard drive is failing altogether. Sometimes hard drives die slow and annoyingly inconsistent deaths. At one moment, it appears that you can copy data to the disk, the next moment, you're getting seemingly random errors.

When a hard drive fails in this way, it's nearly impossible for me to pop up a dialog that says "Hey, time to replace the drive". This particular pattern of errors, though, over several backup runs, is very consistent with the symptoms of a failing hard drive.

    Mike
